What size tires fit 17x9.5 wheels?

This seems to be something I can't really find an answer to easily. How do you figure out what size tires will fit 17x9.5 wheels? I was looking at some aftermarket wheels on a website, and they don't say what size tires go on them...

275/40/17 is the correct size. 285/40/17 is ~1.2% too small. Stock tire radius for our cars is 25.6"

275/40/17 = 25.66"

285/40/17 = 25.97"

Both tires are within the factory tire height range, 25.65" to 26.18".

The 275s should put you pretty much spot on with the Speedo, the 285s would read ~1 MPH slower than actual speed.

When I need to figure out a proper tire size, I use this: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

x2. 275/40/17 is the factory size for my car, but I'm unsure if SLP adjusts the odometer/speedometer for the 0.02" difference in tire radius. Not that it's needed for that small of a difference.

How far "off" the speedo would be depends on what tires were on whichever car he's asking about. Remember.... the V8 cars came with three different tire sizes. The base V8 models got 235/55-16's (the 26.18" cited above), the Z-rated tire option bumped them to 245/50-16 (the 25.65" cited above), and the SS/WS6 coupes with 275/40-17 (25.66").

Its not clear what car Brangeta is getting the aftermarket 17x9.5" wheels for. He would have to check his tire sticker to see what tire the 95 Z28 came with from the factory, for example.

4th gen SS's had 17x9 and 275s, so I run 285s on my 9.5s.
