Exclamation Tires on a budget?

OK, my Yokes have about had it, and I'm on a budget. I did some shopping at Tire Rack and came up with some options, but I want to see if anyone has any opinions on the tires listed above. I need something in a 275/40/17. Wet traction isn't that big of a deal, and snow driving ain't gonna happen. Vote for what you like the best, or if you have another suggestion, let me know.

Re: Tires on a budget?

Here are links to TireRack's info pages:
Sumitomo HTR-Z
Sumitomo HTR-Z II
Fuzion ZRi
BFG g-Force Sport

So far I'm leaning toward the HTR-Z, but it seems like there are some quality control issues with them. Any help?

My current tires are Yokohama A520's. I love them, but they are too pricy and too soft. They worked great for the kind of stuff I used to use the car for, but are no longer necessary. The thing will likely not see another road course for a few years, and will have only limited dragstrip driving. The Yokes saw about 80% track driving mixed with about 20% street. The car now sees maybe 5% track driving and 95% street, as it is now my daily driver.

I'm on my second set of HTRZ's. I've never had a problem with them. They're smooth on the highway and are great in the rain.

I got HTRZ IIs about 3 weeks ago and I absolutely love them. Not only is the traction really good, but they are quite attractive to boot. Very easy on the eyes mounted on my TT2s. (pics in sig)

defintely check out discounttiredirect.com. they're a board sponser and have free shipping and no taxes, unlike those links you posted up. they don't have the sumitomos, but the a couple of my friends have the Hankooks all the way around and they love them. those will be the next tires I buy. Good luck.

I checked out Discount, but they just didn't have the selection or the prices of tire rack. I am planning on having the Discount Tire near my house do the mounting and balancing for me, though. I already talked to them about it.

Re: Tires on a budget?

Well, I lost my passenger-side rear today, so I ended up just running down to Discount Tire and had them mount up a set of Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's on the back. If I like them, I'll end up doing the same for the fronts. If not, there's a set of BFG G-Force TA's on Ebay right now.

And Zach, thanks for the ti about price matching at the store. I'll look into that. Discount only charged me $133 per tire, which really isn't bad, so might not be worth it. Besides, the guys were really good and did a great job. If somebody in the Scottsdale/ Tempe AZ area needs a store recommendation, let me know.

Hope you like the 712's a lot better than I do.

Very quick to harden and crack. Watch for cracks that develop in the tread area inbetween the tread blocks. Grip goes away very quickly, but treadwear is fairly decent.
