Go to Tire Rack. Click on "tires by size". Enter 275/40-17. You will get a list of 37 different tires (including "competition" tires). Look at the ones that interest you, and when looking at a specific tire, click on "surveys". You will get owner feedback ratings of things like dry traction, wet traction, wear, noise, etc. You will also see a link that allows you to compare all the tires they sell in that category ("compare this tire to other....").
When you get the list of available tires (Tire Rack does not sell Nitto), pick the things that are important to you, and see which tire(s) rate the highest.

Are you looking for "max performance summer" tires? Look at the top rated tires - Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. The Continental Extreme Contact DW looks interesting, but they look very new, and I haven't seen any feedback on them. Price is good though, if they perform as good as the limited feedback indicates.
I only drive my car about 1500-2000 miles per year. I want an all out tire (not a comp tire however). I have been trying to decide between the Kumho Ecsta XS and Toyo Proxes R1R. Unfortunately, Michelin Pilots Spport PS2's are a little beyond my means.
Personally if you only drive the car 2K / year I would guess that means Dry Summer weather only. If that's true I would go with a Performance Summer Tire... That way you get the best traction and avoid giving up tire for weather that the car never sees.
In my debate with 17s vs 18s I was going to with the DS3s if I went 17", but decided that the KDW IIs were a little better rated, and I also really like the look of 18s...
There's clearly enough feedback the DS3s are a great tire for the $. But I agree with Injuneer, Continental Extreme Contact DWs also look like they really perform well, but are so new the feedback is limited. They might also be worth taking a shot as well.

Personally I've tested BFG Sports and Nitto NT05.
The BFGs worked great when my car was stock, they last quite a long time and are predictable and grippy enough.
The Nittos though are something else. Got them after I built the engine and the BFGs couldn't hold anything anymore. I can now get away with almost anything on these tires past 30mph. I can even corner flat out in 2nd and not lose grip on a good road...
I highly recommend the Nitto NT05 tires for occasional good weather driving, they supposedly wear out faster but they WORK. And they are under 600$ for a set from discounttiredirect.com.
