tire question...

i have 275-40-17 tires on some 17x9.5 tt2's

the centers of the tires (rear faster ) are wearing very fast. after about 9k miles the middle of the rears are gone and the front has like 30% left

the outter edges look great but why are the centers wearing out fast?

btw i was running 40 psi for the first 3k miles, then gradually put it down to 28 psi in all four tires (about 5k miles at 28 psi) but still going bald in the centers... oh and the tires are the cooper brand...

40psi was a serious and costly mistake. You wore enough off the centers with that pressure for 9K miles, that reducing the pressure too low later on wasn't enough to offset the initial wear.

Get the tires re balanced. It would be the best thing do to as far as saving them goes.

well for next time, what is the correct psi for 27540r17 tires? oh and does $$$ mean quality? like bfg are like $200/each where as rikkin's are like
$89/each (the coopers were only $100/each new)

Generally, a more expensive tire offers better performance - but not all the time. Best thing to do is find a site like Tire Rack, that has owner feedback comparison ratings for many different tires, and allows you to compare them for things like dry traction, wet traction, cornering, tread life, noise, smoothness, etc. Pick the features that are most important to you, then look to see if there is a significant difference in rating between the tire at a price you want to pay, and one that is a bit more expensive.

I ran a set of Goodyear GS-C 275/40-17's at 32-34psi, and got 45,000 miles out of them, sold them with 1/3 of the tread still left on them.

I absolutely love my 255/55/16 BFG Sport T/A's.. I've had them over a year and around 15k miles +/- and I'm still close to 60% tread left. With my shift kit at WOT it rips the tires off the pavement from 1st to 2nd, and 3rd to 4th usually breaks them loose a little, and the way I drive I'm really surprised at how long they're lasting me.

Really worth the money if you ask me, not to mention a few burn outs lol =)
