30 psi is a good "compromise" of all things: tire wear, traction, and ride comfort.
Running increased pressure will help extend the life of the tire, but it may hurt traction, and it'll make the ride more harsh, as well as giving the car a more "darty" feeling on the road.
Running lower pressure will improve traction, soften the ride, but it won't help with long-term tire life / treadwear.
You also have to consider how the tires are ACTUALLY wearing. Are they wearing more on the outsides? (too soft) or right down the middle? (too hard)
Anywhere from ~30 to 35 psi is probably appropriate
. The book really isn't that far off on this issue
