Street Tires PSI at the Drag Strip
Street Tires PSI at the Drag Strip
We're going to the drag strip next Friday, what are you guys running for tire pressure on 245/50-16s? The tires are Kumho Ecsta ASX's if that matters. On normal street driving I am running 35 PSI, as indicated on the door. Should I drop the rear down to 30 PSI?
My brother has a '95 Z28 with 275/40-17s on it, what pressure should he be running? They are BF Goodrich KDWS of some sort.

I wouldn't go under 26-27psi. A normal street tire has a stiff or semi stiff sidewall for handeling purposes. The sidewall is not going to 'wrinkle" like a dr or slick. Start at 35 and go down, avoid the waterbox and do a quick "clean the tires burnout". A street tire isn't going to benefit from a long burnout.
I've cut 60' times as good as 1.92 with street tires pumped to ~35-36 psi, and as bad as ~2.3's with the tires deflated to ~25 psi
.
I'm not sure if the 17's take about the same pressure or not though?
(probably?

It really depends on the tire. I had played with the pressure on my stock Goodyears and it didn't seem to matter what I did. My best time was at the street pressure(32psi). I put my Toyos on after burning off the Goodyears and my best time was actually dropping the pressure to 20psi and doing a pretty long burnout. Rubber compounds vary between tires so it's a matter of figuring out what works best for your car.
