standard size vs. option size vs. anything else?

standard size vs. option size vs. anything else?
My '96 camaro has the factory 16" aluminum wheels. (width unknown). The door sticker calls for 215/60/16 tires. Walmart also lists 235/55/16 tires as the optional size. Will the wider tires be ok for my factory wheels? BTW, what is the width of the factory aluminum?

ok, thanks for the reply. think 245's will work or will they have too much sidewall roll? if 245's work, what ratio should I get 50? 45?

245/50-16 was the stock size on the V8 cars with the Z-rated tire option, and 16x8" wheels. That size will throw your speedo off a little, compared to the 215/60-16's the PCM is calibrated for. The speedo will read about 2% higher than actual speed. Using a 245/45-16 would result in too small a tire diameter, and throw the speedo off even more.

Ok, I did the math and both 215/60/16 and 235/55/16 have an overall diamiter of 26.1" . What other tire sized for a 16x8 wheel will have that same diamiter? a little bigger (like 1/2 inch max.) wouldn't bother me too much. I don't want to go any shorter though.

Yes, a lot of people are running the 255/50-16 on the stock wheels with no problems.
Everyone seems to feel that the V6 cars got the same 16x8" wheels.... did you ever pull a wheel off and look for any kind of size marking? I honestly do not know what size wheels they put on the base model V6's.
