Putting too narrow a tire on too wide a wheel may lead to sidewall damage, or the sidewall/bead of the tire rolling inward under hard cornering, causing loss of air pressure. The incorrect angle of the sidewall will cause the tire to flex more and run hotter, reducing carcass life. It is also likely to "cup" the tread, producing excessive wear on the edges of the tires. Since the tire will be narrower than the wheel, it will look "stretched" and too small - ever see a 63 Chevy "low rider" with a set of tires 2 sizes too narrow for the wheel? Since the edge of the tire will not stick out past the edge of the wheel, the wheel will be more susceptible to curb and pothole damage.

Why do you feel 275's will be a problem? They were the stock tires on the WS6 and SS coupes. The wheel wells are designed for them. Many of us run 275/40-17's on all 4 corners. As long as you get a 17x9.5" wheel with an offset in the range of 45-56mm, you will be fine. If you bought the ZR1 17x9.5" wheels, they are usually available in 37.5mm and 56mm offsets. You should have bought the 56mm offset - or else the tires will be sticking outside the fenders.

I run the 17x9.5" 56mm ZR1's on the front, with 275/40-17 BFG KDW tires. They fit perfectly, and do not rub on anything.
