Rim size makes a difference

Hi Everyone, I'm doing some mods to my 91 RS and one of the things I want to do is change out the rims and tires. Unlike so many of the younger generation performance car enthusiast I perfer to go "Old Skool". Not a fan of the oversized rims ("dubbs") and small diameter tires. I am going with a set of basic 15" Centerlines. But what I want is the rear tires to be just slightly wider than the front "gives the F-body that look of authority. If I stay witht the 15" rims what size tires should I go with, I figured for the front I could use the 15.7" and on the rear use the 15.8 1/2" rims. Also does this affect the performance of the vehicle. What can you tell me!!!!!

Re: Rim size makes a difference

I'm with you. When I get new wheels I'm getting the Centerline Convo-Pros 15/7 with P235/60R15s all around. I haven't decided what brand tire I'm going to go with, but I like the Uniroyal Tigerpaws.

Getting a different size in the back might throw off the speedo, but I'm not sure. That's one reason I want to keep the same diameter as stock, just get them wider. If you get those size wheels, you'll want P235/60R15s for the front and P275/60R15s for the rear.

Here's an IROC in Aussie with that setup:

Re: Rim size makes a difference

rim size has main parts measured in inches...diameter 15, 16... and width 8, 9.5, 11...

most tires are measured or listed in metric...245/60/15, where the 245 is the width, the 60 is the sidewall and 15 is the diameter.

to maintain a stock wheel size to keep you speedometer correct you need something like a 275/50/15 tire to get 25.8" tire diameter. mate this to a 9.5" wide wheel for optimal fit.

any other questions?

235/60/15s are a little bit bigger than stock i think. but not enough to really matter. they spec out to 26.1" wheel diameter.

i would look into going with 16" rims, there are many more options when it comes to wider street tires in that diameter than the 15s. and price and availability of rims is pretty much the same.

Re: Rim size makes a difference

I'm into the old skool look as well. I'll be running 15x7 up front, and 15x10 out back. Don't worry, I plan on having it capable of burning up the rears. I'm looking into regearing to 4.10s, so I'll have to recalibrate the speedo anyway. I like the look of wide tires out back, and I'll probably go a little wider. It's a toy, so I'm going to have fun.

Good looking Iroc!

Thanks 91 Camaro RS for the info, the pic is great of the red RS in Aussie. Thre rim I want are similar, deep dish type without any slits (openings) in them. Can order a set from Summit for a great price.
