What's the best way to tackle this project guys?

 

There's the labor intensive way and the potentially dangerous way:

1. Labor intensive way is to simply sand it off. Not recommended unless you're an experienced metal finisher.

2. Dip the part in muriatic acid. This acid will not only eat through your skin it will also eat through your asphalt floor.

As you can probably guess either one of these methods is going to be a huge hassle to do yourself. Your best bet is to take your wheels to a chrome shop and have them strip them.

(The third way is probably the way the shop will do it, which is to submerge the part into a chrome bath and reverse the polarity on the anode and electrochemically strip it.)

 

Hmmm... This is a project I would like to do myself, probably wouldn't be a good idea to just paint over the chrome, would it?

 

Depends. If you're looking to just do something like change the wheel from chrome to black, you could sand blast the chrome to rough it up enough to have a decent surface for the paint to etch itself into. Sears carries portable sand blasters. You could just paint directly over the chrome as it is now if you wanted to but the paint isn't going to last as long as with the beforementioned method.

IF black was the color you were wanting to change to, there's also this product that you could use that would allow you to completely skip the sand blasting step because it's specially formulated to adhere to chrome or polished surfaces:

More expensive than just going with regular paint, but also more unique.

 

That would be pretty unique. I am doing black. I may just try to ruff up the surface with sandpaper and go from there. I would to look nice, but it doesn't necessarily need to last forever.
