Rear wheel stud removal?
Rear wheel stud removal?
Ok, So I have 4 of the studs on my rear wheels sheered off (long story, never take your car to Discount Tires), and I'm just wondering -- How the heck do I replace these things?
I bought 4 new replacement bolts, and I was thinking this would be a really easy swap, but after removing the wheels and having a look at the disc brake assembly, I cant figure out how how to get easy access to the back!
Has anyone else had to do this before, and could possibly uh.. give me a nudge in the right direction?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Rear wheel stud removal?
Where the end of the threading on the nut is, the bolt is just twisted off. Basically what happened is, I let my Mom borrow this Camaro for a few months while I was fixing her Ford Probe. During this time, she took the car to America Tire Co for wheel rotation, at which point they "informed" her that she had 4 broken bolts. She asked them what they could do, and they said that they arent able to fix it, but they said that they did give her new nuts.
Now, when she told me this, besides being utterly stumped at how the 4 bolts could be broken, I thought: Why the hell did they give her new lug nuts? After pondering this for a while, it came to me: If they had broken the studs themselves, the rest of the stud would still be in the nut, thus evidence that they twisted it by having their air wrench set to wayyy to high torque (how else could this happen? It's nearly a clean sheer, and I dont think that happens from hitting bumps in the road.

so 4 of the studs have the tips broken off into the lug nuts?

It's like this on both sides in the rear, two studs broken in half on each rear wheel.
The store that did it was Discount Tire/America Tire Co in Sacramento.

Re: Rear wheel stud removal?
damn, with 2 broken studs, they shouldnt have even let you drive off the property. If a 5 lug vehicle has 2 broken studs, it has to be towed off, cant be driven. same with a 4 lug and 2 broken studs
Re: Rear wheel stud removal?
JasonK, I'd love it if there were holes behind the rotor for these things to pop out, except when i feel behind the rotor, its all covered by that backing which is bolted to the axle. My question is, how can I remove the rotor so I can even knock these things out?
I'm pretty sure I have to remove the brake calliper, right?
