Question for those w/ stock height, w/ 315/45/17 tires
Hope someone can give me an idea on this, and yes, I have read the FAQ on this issue
Edit: The title was supposed to say 315/35/17
I have some 17x11's for the rear of a 95Z. I want to put the 315/35/17 tires on the rear. In the FAQ, it says you may have to do some of the following, and then some don't have to do anything to make them fit.
I noticed most of the people who have had to do some major modifications, had their cars lowered, etc. Well, mine is still at stock height (I like it that way), and just wondered if I need to be prepared to beat the fender in at all.
And exactly what point of the fender. I think the FAQ mentioned the 9 o' clock position. But how much should I have to beat it in, if I have to at all?
Right now, for the time being, I have 285/45/17's on those 17x11's and they fit w/ no problems. Just wondering if I could get that lucky again....
I found an EXCELLENT deal on some 315's through a tire vendor for about a $100 a pop, a very high rated tire on special, so I jumped on it.
Any of you w/ stock height have these?
Thanks!

Re: Question for those w/ stock height, w/ 315/45/17 tires
My car is at stock height, and I had to hammer the inner fenders. A buddy of mine had a stock ride height 97 SS convertible, and he didn't have to hammer at all.
Re: Question for those w/ stock height, w/ 315/45/17 tires
Thanks for the pic, that does give me an idea.
How much depth did you have to hammer in? Looks like from the pic about 1/2" or so?? I would love to be one of the lucky ones....Did you use a 3# hammer? If I did use one, I'd like to have some kind of rubber mallet.
Also, about how long did it take to hammer them in that much??

Re: Question for those w/ stock height, w/ 315/45/17 tires
Hard to say how deep it is... probably about 1/2". 3# hammer. It's just a matter of putting the wheel/tire on and seeing how close it is. I do have a Strange 12-bolt rear. Not sure is that might have a tiny difference in width that made it a problem, but I doubt it.
I have since hammered them even more, for 28" slicks.
When you get all done, you get a can of rubberized undercoat and cover it up. I think if I was doing it again, I'd try to be a bit neater.

I put mine on with no problems at all. You can see on the passenger side in the wheelwell wher the tire polished the inner fenderwell a little but thats it. I have the sumitomo's. Now if I got the Gdy GSD3's I would have to use a hammer b/c those tend to be a little wider than most.

Did it cut your tire at all? Could you feel it hitting against the wall when you slid the tire on?
When I ordered these, a sales rep called me within 2 minutes of the order at work to ask me if I was sure I wanted these. He wanted to let me know that they were larger than the OEM size, and that I could have problems. At least they double check for some people, but I assured him I was good to go.
Anyone have any really good pics of these tires from the rear?

I had them installed last night. We had to beat the fender just barely. Maybe 1/8-1/4" or so. They went right on, and look very hot! I will post up some pics soon. I can't believe I just didn't do this sooner!
Thanks to all of you for the help and replies!

Re: Question for those w/ stock height, w/ 315/45/17 tires
I just put my 17x11 wheels on the car(no tires mounted yet) and I can tell I have to modify the bumpstops on each side for sure. I might need to do a little hammer work to clear the tires, it looks like it will be real close. The wheel was touching the bumpstop on both sides(my rear suspension is hanging loose right now).

As for hammer work, I only had to go about 1/8-1/4" if that much. The Sumitomo tucked in really nice
Re: Question for those w/ stock height, w/ 315/45/17 tires
i just put some 17x11 zr1s with Nitto 315s on the rear onto my 99z.
stock height and rear.
i can slid my fingers all the way around the inside edge of the tire, so there is at least that much clearance on my car between the tire and fender. there are a few edges (visible on Fred's pic) that i may pound in since they look a bit sharp. but i've taken a few hard turns and they don't seem to rub.
we'll see what happens when i lower it this summer.
fred also has a good pic of how he ground down the bump stop to clear the tire for when you have to jack it up. as long as you jack by the axle (keep the wheel from dropping) you dont really have to do that. but if you jack by the frame (shop or emergency) the tire will hang up on the bump-stop bracket.
ask fred for the pic...he sent it to me last week...so i know he has it. or maybe check out www.injuneer.com for it.

Yep, I never did try on the tire first. I seen the edges that looked sharp, according to Fred's pic, and I went ahead and pounded them in a little. Just to be safe. After I put the tire on, I could easily slide my hand back there, around the tire, just as you mentioned w/ your car.
But the bumpstop has me a little frustrated. Fred, if you see this, can you email me the pic that he is talking about? Or post it here? Email is:
hotrodn350@hotmail.com
I really need an idea about grinding that area. I do want to able to jack the car up from the frame when I need to in the future.
Thanks!
