P285/40/17 tires.

Is anyone using a P285/40/17 tire on the factory GM 17x9 SS wheels? Either the ZR-1 or 10 spoke factory SS wheels. Does this tire size look good on that size wheel. Is It worth running that size tire over the more standard P275/40 17 tires? What does the side wall look like on the 285 tire? Thanks for your replies.

Re: P285/40/17 tires.

The 285/40 will be about 1/3" larger in diameter than the 275/40. That means the individual sidewalls will be about 1/6" taller. Not likely you would notice it. If your car came stock with 245/50-16 tires, the 285/40 will cause the speedo to read 1.2% lower than actual speed - less than 1mph error at 60mph.

Some manufacturers recommend at least a 9.5" wide wheel for the 285, some go with 9.0" but it shouldn't be a problem.

When you are looking for a tire, review the specs carefully. Some manufacturers' 285 tires are actually no wider than the 275's from other manufacturers. There's probably not a whole lot of extra traction or cornering power to be gained by the small differences between a 275 and a 285.
