Nitto: NT-01 vs 555R II
NT-01 is softer and is asymetric. You can rotate them across the car.
NT555R2 is a little harder and is directional. Can't rotate as easily.
If you're wanting a tire like this with a more daily driver friendly compound but that is still track worthy then I'll recommend the Falken RT-615.
If you're wantnig tires for the track only I'd go NT-01. It has larger shoulder blocks and more rubber for the contact patch.

I want a tire that I can use for both autocrossing and drag racing. I want the sticky rubber and the stiff sidewalls.
I'll be keeping my GS-D3's for daily driver duty, since I'm not afraid of rain.

a few of the autocross guys run nitto 555R II's.From what i've seen they have good life(last the whole season of autocross) as well as a whole bunch of daily driven use and runs down the track.
Have you considered Falken Azenis(unless that is the RT-615) They arent an R compound but they are also a popular amung the solo 2 crowd. Not sure how they do on the drag strip though.

Falken Azenis is like Saying BFG G-force. You have 4 different tires to choose from.
Just my preliminary thoughts on the RT-615 is that I like it over the KD. It hooks better cold and I have had no worries in the rain, but I didn't have any prob's w/the KD in the rain either.
IMO, they're definately worth a look. Plus you can pick them up for under $160/tire (in 275/40-17) from discounttiredirect.
