Re: New Rims Help!

The 275/40-18 tires are correct for the Corvette, not for the 4th Gen F-Body. They are 1" larger in diameter than your stock tires, assuming you started with the Z-rated 245/50-16's. They will raise your car 1/2" farther off the ground, and cause the speedo to read 4% lower than actual speed, unless you have the tire size corrected in the PCM.

The offset of the wheels is shown as 50mm, which is OK for a 9.5" wide wheel on a 4th Gen.

A 275/35-18 would be a closer match, being about 1/4% smaller than the stock 245/50-16's.

If your car did not have the Z-rated tire option (RPO QLC), the difference will not be as much. The 275/40-18 is only about 1/2" larger in diameter than the 235/55-16's that came on the base V8 cars.

What about lowering the car?

Re: New Rims Help!

Lowering the car will reduce or eliminate the 1/2" gain from the oversize tires. That will also force the tires farther up into the wheel wells when the suspension compresses. At stock ride height, they are already 1/2" closer to the edges of the fender lip. Lower it, and the gap drops even more.

Probably no big deal one way or the other, as long as you are aware of the potential issues with the oversize tires.

There was a thread here a month or so from a guy who had a problem with 40-series tires ripping the fasteners for his ground effects kit off.
