You can fit wheels from 15" to 20" diameter, 8" to 11" wide. Some 15's require spacers or grinding the rear brake calipers. Anything over 18" needs extremely careful fitment. You don't want to go less than 8" wide. If you go to 11" wide, you MAY need to roll the inner lip of the wheel opening, hammer the inner fender or grind the corner off the jounce bumper bracket.
In the front, the width limit is about 9.5". In the rear 11.0".
You need to have two things to fit the wheels on a 4th Gen:
The "bolt circle" must be 5 lugs on 4-3/4".
The "offset" of the wheels must be correct to locate the wheel inside the fender line.
Typically, you need to look at offsets (a rough guideline):
8" wide wheel - 35 to 55mm
9" wide wheel - 45 to 55mm
9.5" wide wheel - 45 to 56mm
10" wide wheel - 45 to 52mm
11" wide wheel - 50mm
All of the above is a general guide line. I'm sure there are people who have put 10" or 11" wide wheels on the front, and maybe 12" on the rear, but those cases require careful selection of tires, and may involve other modifications.

The backspace required for the 3rd Gen wheels is a lot less. The rear axle assembly on the 3rd Gen is 3" narrower overall, compared to the 4th Gen, so you need a wheel with about 35-40mm less offset. And if I recall correctly, some of the 3rd Gens had different backspace requirements on the front and back.
