how to tell how wide

Hi I just found a great replacement rim thats a 17x9.5, the kid i bought the car from isnt sure if they are 17x9 or 17x9.5. He said he thinks they are oem ss wheels which should be the 17x9 if im correct? Is there any way with the tire on to be able to get the width of the rim? or will it be stamped into the back of the rim at all? Just dont wanna have one rim wider then the others. Thanks!

Mostly every wheel should have the size and offset stamped on the inside. OEM SS wheels are 17x9.

IF its not stamped on the back of the wheel, you would have to take the tire off, but you can measure it by going from where the tire bead sits on the inside of the rim, across to the other side where the tire bead will sits on the inside. That will tell you the width of the rim. Or you could take it to a tire place, some still have the old style calipers the measure the rim and tell you how wide it is, or maybe even the balance machine can tell.

Also, you can use a carpenter's square and get a little creative to achieve your goal.
