How large tire will fit?

On the back of a '94 T/A?

I'm getting ready to buy some larger diameter street tires for daily driving and am trying to find out what will fit without rubbing. I'm looking at a 295/50-16 Cooper tire. It has an advertised diameter of 27.69" with a section width of 11.93". I'm not worried about the diameter so much as I still have some clearance with Hoosier 27x11.50 QTP's. I'm concerned about the section width. I haven't had the QTP's on for a while, but if I remember correctly I didn't have much room left between the back side of the tire and the wheel well with the QTP's. The advertised section width of those is 11.2", so I'm looking at ~.75" wider section with the Cooper's.

Any help is appreciated.

Mark

I barely had any rub with my 315 nittos, i'd doubt you'd have any rub with 295's. You may need a adjustable panhard rod if your rear is exactly centered, or you can just pull out the hammer

What diameter are your 315's and what is the section width? The one's I'm thinking about are almost a 28" diameter. I thought the 315's were a bit shorter than that.

A 315 is 315mm which translates to about 12 and half inches i believe. As far as the diameter you should be fine, a 28 inch tire will fit. Most people that run 28 inch slicks have to clearance because they grow but with a regular radial you'll be fine.

Generally, a 315mm width will fit if you roll the inner lip of the fender. An adjustable panhard rod may be necessary.

295/50/16 is not a good idea. The height is nearly 2" taller than stock and may cause problems with your ABS. There are plenty of tire options out there that will fit.

I'm not sure if you plan on staying with 16" rims...that will restrict your options. *I* would shoot for a 315/35/17.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm going to stay with 16" wheels, but I want a taller rear tire for street use because I have 4.10's and most of my driving these days is on the interstate at 70-75 mph. With the stock tire height of 25.5" I'm turning over 3,000 rpm.

I'm aware of potential problems that some people have with the ABS. When I race the car at the track I run 27 x 11.5 QTP's out back and 165/80R's up front. I've hit the brakes fairly hard a few times (to keep from breaking out) and haven't had problems. However, with the 295's on the street I'm going to run a front tire that's a 235/55, which is a little over 26" tall. So there won't be as much difference in sizes as there are with my drag tires.

Sounds like a gear problem, not a tire problem. I really don't think that tire will band-aid your problem as much as you think.

But once again, good luck with everything.

Okay, I'm game: What specifically do you think my problem is and what would you do?

I want to reduce the cruising rpm's and at the same time I want a certain look to the car that only a tall tire can give me.

I've already stated that *I* think it's a gear problem. You have to decide what is most important, gears at the track or gears on the highway.

It's your car...you can do whatever you want with it. Good luck with whatever you decide

Thanks. I think with a little creativity I can enjoy both worlds without having to change gears whenever I want to do either.
