How close to sidewall damage should be to junk the tire?

How close to sidewall damage should be to junk the tire?
Got a nail in tire. Damn construction area, I am living at. It's like 1" from sidewall. Tire brand discontinued...

when i worked at a tire place years ago we were not allowed to fix unless it was a 1/4 into the tread

The spec per the RMA is 1/2".
