The problem isn't "what will fit" on the stock 16x8" wheel, its "what is available"? The largest "high performance" street tires I'm aware of are the 255/50-16's. Anything else is going to be a track only tire (Hoosier DOT Radial), or a lower line tire like the BFG Radial TA all-season. And most of the BFG's are a huge diameter that you probably wouldn't want on the car. Even the Hoosier 275/45-16's require at least an 8.5" wide wheel.

Question Tires

The largest and widest tire I found for my 16x8 rims
was the BFG Sport. 255-50-16. Approx 9.5 wide and
26.1 diameter for the rear.
245-50-16 BFG KDWs for the front as the 255s have been
known to rub, especially on a lowered car.
The 245s are about 8.7" wide and 25.7 in diameter.
Dunlop also makes a similar 255-50-16 tire.
