Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Tires? Opinions?

Hey guys its about that time to get some tires... I currently have nearly new 275/40/17 BF GOODRICH KDW's sitting in my garage ready to go on...

But ive been debating if I should get Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval tires... Tirerack has them on sale and are cheaper than the KDW's yet when tested on a 325 BMW it got slightly higher performance scores all the way around.

What do you guys think??

My car is a LE2 heads/cam

My experience with tires has always been that you get what you pay for with tires.

I've never actually driven on Wide Ovals, and I haven't heard anything bad, but I also haven't heard anything particularly good either. I'm always wary in situations like this.

The KDW has an excellent, well-earned reputation.

Right now I have a set of Eagle F1 GS-D3s. Great tire -- a touch cheaper than a KDW, and a match for it in terms of performance. It makes a lot of road noise, though. The next tires I want to try are Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s. They're a fair bit more expensive, but from what I can tell, they're the best street tire out there.

I'd also like to try a few different offerings from Nitto.

Great tire, I still wish they made the Firestone SZ50's. Read the reviews on Tirerack, unbelievable how many Vette owners love the Firestones, and they aren't afraid to whine.

Are the Wide Ovals narrower than other 275/40/17's like the SZ50's were? I've got the SZ50EP's and they're about an inch narrower than other 275/40/17 tires. I think they're like 9.5" wide and most other 275/40/17's are like 10.5" wide.

I remember the good 'ol SZ50's. Wow, what a tire! It was like driving on fly paper. I miss them damn things. Probably the best street tire I have ever owned.

They've been a great tire dry or wet! It'll be hard to find a tire to replace them...
