I have a '01 Z28 convertible, 6speed with the stock Goodyear Eagle gs-c tires, and it's already time to replace them. They suck!!! On a recent drive through a twisty 68 to Harrodsburg, KY they fought and screamed through every turn. I can't keep them planted during straight line acceleration either. PSI is set at 30 on stock 16" wheels. This car is only driven on the street, never raced. Any suggestions?

I have read through some posts already, but still don't have a definite answer. I'd like hear about y'all's experiences with your tires, what was good and what sucked. I don't want to start a big debate, just read about what works and what doesn't. Thanks...

 

Kuhmo V700 Victoracer is a tire I have on the front of my car right now. I believe they make a 245/50/16 for your car's rim but I'm using a 255/40/17. It turns harder and brakes than any tire I've ever tried. it's tread is quiet however it's sidewall is stiff and will stiffen the ride quality. My lowered car with stiff springs and struts is brutal but a stock suspended car would be fine. Tread width is 6/32" on the inside and 4/32" outside I believe so you DO NOT want them in the rain. They wear out fast too but who needs a 40,000 mile tire on a sports car? You'll get 10K out of these.

Out back I run a 315/35/17 Nitto Drag radial. With a 16" stock rim I wouldn't reccomend this. I would run Victoracers racers out back also in the 245/5016, 255/5016, or 245/45/16 size.

Yokohama makes some great performance tires. Their old "Intermediate" was on top of it's game at a bargain price. The new AVS is good and looks wild. I ran their AO32R roadrace tire for a while and it's stickier than most drag radial tires but with a hardsidewall for cornering. I reccomend them for a race car but they have a MEtal grinding sound while rolling and it gets worse when you brake. I like music and exhaust sounds...Not tire sounds.

A Tire I would NEVER reccomend: Dunlop Sport SP8000... Goodluck!

 

He asked for good street tires, and as far as I know, the Victoracers are DOT approved race tires.... So, pass on the Victoracers for the street. Also, you can't buy the SP8000s anymore since they have been discontinued (and as a side note, I loved mine until they went bald).
Anyways, your best bet is to go to Tire Rack and read some of the reviews they have on the tires. That should give you a good idea on what to expect. My personal recommandation to you would be Goodyear Eagle F1-DS3, IMO they are great street tires and will perform well even for occasional auto-X/road-racing. I have no idea how they perform in the snow though. Good luck.
