Best Gripping Street Tires
Best Gripping Street Tires
Facts, opinions, personal experience? need help on picking a tire that has the best hook up capabilities that is a street tire, not a drag radial. would like a set that wil last a while too under "normal" driving conditions, i have a stall converter and if im sittin at a light or at some ::cough:: illegal racing scenes, she wont hook up at all, i have drag radials but i like to save those for the track, kinda expensive. any info is always and as usual greatly appreciated.
Re: Best Gripping Street Tires
with ur stall a regular street tire prolly wont be what ur looking for, but u said u dont want DRs
well my F1 GS-D3s are really grippy when its warm out and teh tires are warm, its a diff story when the weather gets colder

Re: Best Gripping Street Tires
well i ment they are kinda expensive to be burning them up on the street which is what im tryin to avoid, as far as size, 275 17's and wider sizes, price really isnt a issue i just wanna save the drags for the track really unless theres som that are safe to use on the street in the rain, the rouds around here are curvy and it rains a good bit too which is not the camaro's favorite environment.
Re: Best Gripping Street Tires
I cant speak for other tires than what I have owned. Stock GCS's were ok for stock power, but when mods came along it was too much for them. I since switched to 275/40/17 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's. The traction with this tires is pretty damn impressive. They chirp from low speed downshifts, and very little spin when I hit it from a stop. Before my gearing upgrade they would just grip and go. Now there is a slight slip and then instant acceleration. Rain grip is also very impressive. You dont want to try hitting it hard from a stop, but I can actually get on the throttle 60-70% before they start to slip. Snow, well, I hate snow. Tread wear, this is the reason I bought Goodyears. I spoke with many tire experts about my considerations. BFG KDW, Nitto 555, Kumho MX, GS-D3's. The Goodyears were supposed to last the longest and now, over 20,000 miles later they look like they have worn very little. I'd say they are about 50% used. I'm not nice to them either I like to enjoy my LT1 and that means punishing the tires. I have had them up in the mid 100's with no vibration. However its good to hear you use DR's at the track because they grip better on the street than at the track. I could only get 2.4 60's from them. They spun like crazy compared to when I am on the street.
A stall is going to be very hard to tame with street tires. If I had my stall in I'd give you a first hand account. Perhaps if you can wait a while I'll let you know before you buy.
They arent cheap, but from what I read about the other brands, grip and wear, the GS-D3's seemed to be the very best buy. Its awesome in all areas except for price, which I dont mind paying for a tire that performs.

Re: Best Gripping Street Tires
I'm liking my 275/40 R17 Kumho MX's.
Tirerack's actual test (not user reviews) put them just a hair lower than the BFG KD's, but better in the wet. (and it rains alot here in the NW)
Also they are like $70 cheaper per tire than the BFG KD's.
I was reading another magazine, that was more for autocrossing.. the MX's faired well, there were stickier tires.. But, they noticed the MX were alot more heat resisitant (in fact seemed to get stickier when they were warmed up).. while the other tires that scored better in their AX test needed to be cooled down/sprayed between runs
I just got done a HPDE, and I was very happy with their performance. My instructor commented how responsive and predictable they and my car were.. I even got a guy driving a Miata come up and check out my tires afterwards, cause he couldn't believe I was right behind him the whole time during the twisty part.. (he was actually slowing me down...
) I had the up to 130 on the straights and they were just fine.
