Backspacing...and stuff.
Backspacing...and stuff.
My '96 is running the factory salad shooters. Now, I know that they're 16x8 with a 4.75x5 pattern. I do not know the backspacing. I need to know this because I will be upgrading to better wheels/tires. Obviously I could pull the wheel off and measure it, but asking is easier. I may go for a larger rim diamiter, and almost surely wider. So, what backspacing do I want? I realize that if I go wider with the same backspacing the tires will stick out, and that's not a problem. I'll be keeping the same overall diamiter.
Re: Backspacing...and stuff.
The stock 4th Gen wheel is 16x8" with a 55mm offset. That works out to about a 6-5/8" backspace.
For wider wheels, some rough guidelines on "offset":
9 or 9.5" wide: 40-56mm (6.5" - 7.40" backspace)
10.5 or 11" wide (rear only): 45-50mm (7.50"- 8.00" backspace)
Backspace can be calculated from "offset", but many manufacturers spec the wheels in terms of offset rather than backspace. A smaller offset (e.g. 40mm) moves the wheel/tire toward the outside of the car. A larger offset moves it deeper into the wheel well.
