Anyone painted thier own wheels?
Anyone painted thier own wheels?
I have stock 95 Z28 wheels and I think they would look better black or a dark grey. Has anyone tried this before? Did it turn out alright and hold up to the elements? Any tips?
Re: Anyone painted thier own wheels?
I paintd my GTA wheels before. Just make sure to use a good primer and I used the Krylon spray enamel. Several years later they looked great and I sold the car and the person couldnt even tell they were painted.

I painted my originally polished aluminum Eagle 077's.
You can strip them with some Aircraft Stripper (available at Wal-Mart).
Then sand them to give the paint something to stick too.
Then clean them before painting.
Then paint with some Dupl-Color High-Perf. Wheel Coating (Several colors available).
Then clear them with Dupl-Color High-Perf. Wheel Coating Clear.
Mine is holding up pretty good.
The better the prep work, the better it will last.
Also - LOTS of light coats works well. The places on mine where the paint is the thickest is where it is also the smoothest and best looking (up close).

I painted my own wheels. Its really not hard. Just like anything, if you are careful, go slow and spend TONS of prep time, they will be great! I dont have any place to host images, but I could show you, they came out flawless.
You can either just sand over the factory paint, Starting with 200-300 grit sand paper, and working your way up to the thousands. Or use a paint stripper and get it down to the bare metal (which is also an easy way to get your wheels polished aluminum "looking" if you wanted.) Then its just a matter of spraying primer, several coats of the color, and several more of the clear. Good luck!

Re: Anyone painted thier own wheels?
ive painted 3 sets so far and the all have come out really nice, so far no real problems a few small chips but those are easily touched up, i have done black twice and repainted my stock salad shooters gun metal which acutally look really nice i left the lip silver, they are actually presentable now, just sand em like they said get a nice surface to work with get all the oils off from fingerprints, go slow, nice thin coats, and let em get tacky before you do another and then a few coats of clear,
