Not likely.... probably need 1.5" minimum. The 3rd Gen rear axle is 3" narrower than the 4th Gen, so the 4th Gen rear wheel offset is about 1.5" (40mm) greater. That increases the backspace by a similar amount, putting the wheels way deep in the wheel wells.

I don't have a 3rd Gen, so I can only do the math. The IROC 16x8" wheels have a 0mm offset in the front and a 16mm offset in the rear. 4th Gen 16x8" wheels have a 55mm offet. The Strange Engineering site shows the difference in axle width between the 3rd Gen and 4th Gen as 3.0". Some 3rd Gen owners claim its actually 4.0"
Check this site regarding adapters for 3rd Gens. He appears to recommend 2". They no longer sell spacer/adapters (a shame because they were excellent quality), but they still have a how-to on the site:
