315/35/17's on a 17x9 rim... Who's doing this?
I can get a really really good deal on 2 315/35/17's
I need two back tires badly and cant spit the cash for brand new ones.. even cheap new ones...
So what I'm asking is who is running these size on a 17x9 rim with no issues...
I know this isnt the best idea but it can get me by the rest of the summer ....

Nitto 315s are narrower then most other brand's 315 tires. The 315/35 tires will fit on a 17x9 rim, a lot of mustang cobra friends of mine do it, and they dont look out of place at all. There isnt much of a difference though between the 315s and 275s, about 1/2 of an inch of tread. You also run a higher risk of cutting a sidewall with 315s on a 9" rim.

Usually people go, 17x11's...
I'm gonna run some 315/35R17's and everyone says I should go with 17x11's so there ya go, your gonna wanna roll your fender lip and go crazy with a hammer to the rear of the wheel well.. Make some clearance, but there are alot of people running that wide or wider.. Wonder what is the widest? 325's?? Maybe there has already been a thread on this...?

Do a search here and on LS1 Tech. There are all kinds of threads on this subject. They will work fine on 17X9 rims and they will not rub the fender lip with stock rims. I have 315's on my 17X9.5 and they look good and drive good.
Re: 315/35/17's on a 17x9 rim... Who's doing this?
In most tire lines, a 315/35 is quite a bit more than 1/2" wider than a 275/40... heres a BFG 315/35-17 Drag Radial, on the correct 11" wide wheel, compared to a GY 275/40-17 GS-C on a 9.5" wide wheel.... just think what that 315 would look like scrunched onto a 9.5" wide wheel. I hear all the time that the 315 Nitto is a lot smaller and "fits fine" on a 9.5 wheel.... sort makes it seem like you're getting cheated if you aren't getting the width you are paying for

I have seen a 450 HP SC'ed Bullitt run 315s on the stock Bullitt wheels which are 17x8. Is it the safest thing in the world? Probably not, but that car had no problems doing it whatsoever.
Re: 315/35/17's on a 17x9 rim... Who's doing this?
I've seen films of a guy who went over Niagra Falls in a barrel and survived. He had no problems.
"The car had no problems"... but did the tire suffer excessive wear to the carcass due to excessive flex and temperature buildup? Will the chances of a carcass failure be increased? I don't know the answer and I don't have X-ray vision, so I personally wouldn't do it.... I guess engineers get a little **** when they understand the issues involved.
I'm not going to argue the point.... if people want to put big fat tires on little skinny wheels, go for it..... just don't do it in the lane next to me.

Yes, it can mount on that size wheel, and you may not notice any obvious problems with it. However, if you like your car to handle well it is not recommended. 315 on a 9" rim will result in a lot of sidewall flex even if you run high pressures on the street. Also, a 315 tire on a 9" rim will probably have a contact patch very close to the size as a 275 tire on a 9" rim.
Re: 315/35/17's on a 17x9 rim... Who's doing this?
I decided against this....
I'm gonna play it safe, and just save for some new rear tires in 275/40/17's
even if they are used, at least they will be the correct size

My 315's are on 17X9.5's and there is not that much buldge. I did a lot of checking and the 315 NItto is not as wide as mine (Sumitomo HTRZ) or the BFG so it would work fine. I even called and spoke with the tech department of the tire manufacturer and the wheel manufacturer before moutning them and they both said that it would be fine. I just make sure that I always have good tire pressure ( like you should with any tire!) and so far so good.
