22" wheels is it possible?
22" wheels is it possible?
I am not asking for opinions or attitudes-Just could it work
I have 255/35/20's on my car right now
That is a 27.0 inch tall tire
It is close to rubbing but doesn't yet in the front
I think a 21" wheel will fit but they are ultra expensive vs. 22" wheels
For example I found a 21" Giovanna which I think will fit it is a 5x120mm with 40 mm offset 8.5 wide...
22" wheel with 255/30/22 is 28.0 tall 9.5" wide with a FWD offset could it possibly work? I am not a wheel and tire fitment expert so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas?
This is for a show car not a daily driver on airbag suspension aka the car in my signature

Re: 22" wheels is it possible?
According to the tire calculater if you run a 255/25/22 you will have the same size tire height that your running now. The only thing I could find was this Tire
When your speedo says your going 60 mph your actually going 63.2 mph you speedo will be 5.3% too slow. If you go with the tire size in the link it should be the almost the same as what you have now. So it should work.

I thought some people might do that I am just wondering if it is possible-I do think 21's would be cool though just to say I could do it.

Hey... the guy asked a specific question about a show car. He's a respected participant in these forums. If you don't happen to like 22" wheels on an F-Body, don't post. He's not asking for opinions.... he's asking for facts.

Re: 22" wheels is it possible?
when you say close to rubbing, how close are you? i checked out the pics of your ride and it don't look like much room to play with there. everything seems to be tucked in pretty tight. i'd be surprised if they fit. after all, your putting an extra 2" of rim in there along with the width of the sidewall. what's the thickness of that tire now?
in terms of height, just cut out a circle of cardboard or wood that's the same diameter of the 22" + rubber and see how it fits between the ground and lowest point in the wheel well. should give you a general idea without dropping cash for rims.
if you do go with it, post some pics
BTW: cudos on the car. especially the undercarriage - mmmm, all that shiny chrome. man, that took dedication and time. hell, i lose patience just polishing my rims
best of luck.

Re: 22" wheels is it possible?
Thank you for the kind words guys and the advice...I am leaning towards some 21" wheels because of the non-fit factor with 22" rims, it is a 1 inch difference in height from a 255/35/20 to a 245/30/22 at 27.0 to 28.0 inches, I am going to play with some numbers and look at it at different ride heights with the 20's that are on it now. The sting from the 21's at about $3400 won't be as bad since I can sell my 20's with tires that are pretty cherry with less than 5k miles on them, which will offset a good chunk of the cost.
Here is the calculation in difference from what I have now to 22's
Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
255/35-20 3.5in 13.5in 27.0in 84.9in 746 0.0%
245/30-22 2.9in 13.9in 27.8in 87.3in 726 2.8%
And with 21's
Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
255/35-20 3.5in 13.5in 27.0in 84.9in 746 0.0%
245/35-21 3.4in 13.9in 27.8in 87.2in 727 2.7%
Maybe Injuneer could give me some specs as far as backspacing and size goes most of these are 8.5 or 9.5 wide with 40mm backspacing I am looking at, with 5 120mm pattern for a bmw

Re: 22" wheels is it possible?
8.5" wide with a 40mm offset puts the outside of the wheel about 1/4" farther out than the stock WS6/SS wheels, so they are going to be tucked under pretty well.
With the 9.5" 40mm offset wheel, you are getting fairly agressive and pushing the outside edge of the tire out closer to the edge of the fender. It will look pretty good, but its going to be a tight fit on the front with a lowered car. This is the closest thing I could find with a "search".... he says these are 17x9.5 38mm offset. You can see where the tire sits relative to the fender:

(Right click, Properties, and copy the link..... won't work otherwise).

Re: 22" wheels is it possible?
You could, of course, reshape the outer fenders - flaring them out a bit, or removing some material in the right spots. Then you could run an offset that would get the wheels away from interference on the inside of the wheel.
Once you were done modifying the fenders, a little touch-up paint would fix 'er right up!

Re: 22" wheels is it possible?
Its possible. While I was selling my 20s i met a lot of guys who ran 22s. They rubbed on rear area of the front well and the rear tires were cut up from the lip. I showed them how to roll the lip and now no more cut tires. You can see i the sig how low my car was w/20s, Im sure if youre lifted the 22s will fit easily.
Re: 22" wheels is it possible?
From everything I have gathered, I do think it is possible as well, but maybe will end up with 21's as I don't want to deal with it rubbing anywhere. Besides, my car is bagged so I can drop it down and back up so being raised isn't an issue. I think 21's will look nice, anyone want to buy some barely used chrome 20's?
