17x11 vs. 17x10-1/2 wheels

I had a thread a while back about wheel/tire sizes for autocross. The concensus of opinion was that the same size wheels in front and back would better balance the car (plus then you can rotate tires). With this in mind, I was planning on going with 17x11 wheels and 315/35/17 BFG KD's all the way around. The car will be lowered an 1" to an 1-1/2" and I realized that this meant I might have to do some "massaging" in the rear and run spacers in the front to clear the steering knuckle.

JasonD had a thread about 10-1/2" wide wheels in the rear. One of the responses was from Fred, who indicated that the 10-1/2" wheel with a 50mm offset should eliminate most of the clearance issues in the rear.

Three questions:

Could the 10-1/2" wheels with a 50mm offset in front eliminate the need for spacers?

Will there be a noticeable difference in performance, especially cornering, between an 11" wide wheel and a 10-1/2" wide wheel with the same offset?

Are there any other issues with 10-1/2" wheels (odd size, etc.)?

Thanks for the help.
