15x8 welds which tire size
ok i know this has prob been covered a MILLION times but i cant seem to find the answers im looking for with the search or the FAQ section...so here goes... im in the market for new rims im looking at 15x8 welds....my car is a soon to be 383 with a single 70mm turbo suspension mods are minimal....slp subframes and sportlines...the question is whats the biggest tire i can go in the rear with a 15 inch rim??? i know with a 16 inch rim i can safely go 255/50/16..... but since i am going to a 15 inch imm unsure of what will fit now... id really like to squeeze on a P275/60R15 but i dont know if i can get it on there....minor hammerring and grinding of the bumpstop would bother me at all ...thanks guys
What kind of tire are you looking for? ....street? .... drag radial? ....track slick?
What diameter are you looking for? That will be determined by HP level, how hard it launches, rear axle ratio, etc.
Why are you limiting your wheel selection to 8.0" wide?
Here are the links to the Mickey Thompson, BFG and Nitto drag radial tire size charts, with recommended wheel width for each tire:

If you look at the M/T size chart for the MT Drag Radial, it shows that the 275/60-15 will work on a wheel width of 7.5" - 9.5". The show the "measured" width as 8.0", so that is the wheel the tire was designed to fit on.
The sidewall width is 11.0", so it isn't as big a problem at the 28x10.5-15W ET Drags (13.1") that I run on a stock height car. But with a 2" drop on the Sportlines, its going to be very close to the outside lip of the fender DEPENDING ON THE BACKSPACE. You have to get a 5.5" backspace on the 8.0" wide Welds to get the tire just under the edge of the fender. As far as I know, thats the largest backspace they make in a 8.0" wide wheel, but if you could find a 6.5" backspace, it would move the tire away from the fender lip, deeper into the wheel well.
This is where the outside edge of the tire will be with a 5.5" BS on an 8.0" wide wheel:

Somehow, lowering a car 2" doesn't seem consistant with drag racing it.
