****Nitto Nightmare****
****Nitto Nightmare****
This is a warning to anyone that has bought or soon to buy 285/35/18 Nittos, or perhaps others as well. I thought Nitto was a great company, no complaints, UNTIL TODAY!! I was driving on the freeway and the sidwall completely blew off my tire, a tire with about 2000k miles on it only!!! Thank GOD that I didnt lose control. It is plain and simply a defective tire. This goes as a precaution to all. It completely ruined my 18" Black Z06 motorport rim. I will be contacting Nitto Monday morning with a demand to Replace Both my rim and tire. Please becareful!!

Hopefully they will treat me with respect and plain and simply what I deserve...Keep you posted!

I have owned 3 sets of nittos. They have always cracked on the corner of the sidewall but I have never seen one completely rip. It sounds to me like you got a defective tire and they should replace it with no problem.
On a personal note I have had my nittos up to 155mph+ with no problems. Any tire manufacturer can have a defective tire leave its plant, I would wait and see how they take care of you before you start ranting.

In any case, I hope they take care of you.
Wow, that's strange how the carcus didn't let go in a strip or from tread separation like an over-heated tire does. Looks like the tread is perfectly intact.
In fact, it's kinda weird that the sidewall went out in a perfect circle the same size as your rim. I mean, it's not even at a stress point, like the tread shoulder... it's mid sidewall. Strange...
Any chance you lost air, drove with it low/flat for a while and busted the carcuss (cut the sidewall)?
Seems strange that a tire would let go right along the rim guard area, and those corners look like they folded over (more wear from the bead up the sidewall than on the edge of the tread that normally doesn't touch the road). Might be normal for a blow-out, I dunno, but not if the carcus isn't attached to the rim anymore... that's the rim that causes that wear. That tire was run deflated, maybe it went flat and you drove a while before it cut... but that wear pattern just doesn't look like materials went bad in one section of the tire). Any tire can go flat. If you drive with it flat, any tire WILL cut the sidewall. That's just how it works.
Any chance this is a 555R that you deflated at the track and *may* have drove it home without topping it back off first?
hot air at 20psi easily drops to 8 psi once it cools (been there, done that). I had the same wear pattern until I noticed the wiggly rear right tire and pulled over to fill it up about 1 mile down the road. Especially wierd is how it's the right rear wheel that went out... that's the wheel that gets the most abuse in drag racing 4th gens... and the same that most people intentionally run low for traction.
I just don't see how this could be a material issue the way it's cut/worn. Hopefully Nitto can help figure out what happened. I've heard they have great customer service (at least from the import guys opinions). I know they make some great products, I've used them since 2000 and never had a problem... and I doubt they'd appreciate a thread like this even before you contacted them.
Good luck man, post back some results k?

No they are not NT555r. They are the regular street tire. The funny thing is I heard a pop, but I didnt hit a bump or a hole or anything. That is what is strange. I sent Nitto a letter today, and also spoke to them on the phone, I hope they take care of me, being that the tire has about 90-95% thread left,,,

My guess is he typed the thread title quickly and in angst without actually thinking about what it conveyed. He tried to correct the problem (if you read the "subject" of his post [at the top of the post], it doesn't quote the thread title like usual), and that's all he can personally do.
