A few definitions here. Open loop= The PCM operates under certain defined parameters programed into the PCM by the factory. Closed loop= The action taken by the PCM when the engine reaches a certain temp. ( 150 deg. ) and the O2 sensors are at their operational temp. and have begun to occilate (swing) above and below the .5 volt parameter , and #3 is time. Time , temp. , and O2 operation are the three requirement for closed loop. Mind you that this discussion can be a VERY lenthy subject , but this is it in a nutshell. If you disabled one or more injectors , then the SES light will illuminate for missfires on those affected cyl's. A pissy inspector has the right to pull codes on your vehicle if the SES light is on to see if you're violating emissions regulations ( alot do !! ) Again , the cam you are talking about is not big enough that the PCM can't compensate for. You're gonna need alot of overlap to pass enough raw gasses through the cats that the cats can't handle. Thats their job !!

I agree, he should be able to pass the cams he originally suggested, but he's also mentioned that he may be going bigger. I've passed much larger myself with a bit of tuning, but pulling an injector clip can also be a viable option, with the right programming, if needed to pass with a big cam. No offense, but many tech inspectors will give you the green light, as long as you pass the sniffer (especially the kiddos that work at the sticker stops and such), but if needed, the SES light can be disconnected, if it cant be programmed out.

And with a few small exceptions I agree with your open/closed loop definitions. Aftermarket programing can change the open/closed loop triggers, so they are not bound by the factory settings.

Yes I may go bigger, if I can use it without too much added cost. I assume to dissconect the ses light you have to pull the dash?

With the proper wiring diagram you can put a switch in the ground side ( computor) of the SES light to disable the light until you need it. The SES light has a constant hot and the PCM grounds the other side to illuminate the light when a problem has been detected. If needed , I can tell you the wire (Color code and PCM location ) that you'll need to tap into .
