LT-1 overheating issues

I need some advice on my LT-1... the other day I came out of the store and there was water underneath my car, and it was definitely leaking from my car. I drove the car home and later that day the temp gauge started climbing- but real erraticaly. Like it would be at 210, then jump up 20 deg then back down. So I added water to drive it to work this morning and it didn't lose any water, the gauge was steady at 210, then jumped up to 240, then back down, and so on and so on. I've heard there is a trick to adding coolant to LT-1's so you don't get air in the lines, is there something special I need to do?

Anyone else ever have any problems like this? It's almost like the fans aren't cutting on until 230 deg.

Thanks for the help!

Re: LT-1 overheating issues

You aren't the only one with those problems. My camaro started doing it about....two years ago. I've tried everything to fix it, new sensors, scanning, the works. Nothing has worked. I'm clueless, and a lot of other people on this board are as well. The only weird thing I noticed, when we had the car hooked up on the scanners at my friends shop, the fans would activate when they were supposed to. But on the guage, it was reading in the red. We thought the sensors that send the info to the comp. and the guages were bad and replaced them both, it still happens. So I don't know anymore. The guage itself may be bad....that's the last thing we can think of. For right now, I have a manual fan control switch that I use when in traffic. If you find anything out, keep us posted! Good luck!

Re: LT-1 overheating issues

Should I just replace the cap? how do you test it? Sorry to be such an idiot about this, but this really threw me. I mean it could be anything from a bad gauge to a blown head gasket. Oil looks good so far.

I guess I'll double check the fans and maybe put an extra one on in front of the condenser. It seemed to cool down when I was driving...aw hell- Firehawk for sale!

Re: LT-1 overheating issues

try using the bleeding screws on the T-stat and lines to make sure there is no air in the lines. They are brass about a 1/8 in diameter and use a flat head screwdriver.

I've seen that happen. The temp goes up and down as coolant sloshes over the sensor since there's air in the system. Get a new radiator cap after you make sure there are no leaks, then bleed the system.

Re: LT-1 overheating issues

I had a similar situation in my 93 Mustang. It turned out to be the water pump. The bearing was getting worn and was slipping sometimes. In essence, the implellar inside teh pump was just free wheeling and thus the temp would go up. No outside visual clues just it would surge at various times. If your water pump has some mileage on it, it is a definate possibility. Good luck,

Kyle

Re: LT-1 overheating issues

water pump is just over a year old, hopefully that's not it. I'm going to bleed the system and hope for the best right now.

I bought a new cap and bled the system and that fixed it for me.
Good luck

Re: LT-1 overheating issues

tried a new cap- didn't fix it
tried bleeding the air out of the system- didn't work
but the thermostat......

Cars fixed, took replacing a couple cheap items but after I put a new 180 deg thermostat in it ran fine. Stayed around 180-190 this morning and didn't even threaten to get hot. granted, it was cool this morning but last night it was skyrocketing to 240 deg! Think I need to change the oil in it to make sure I didn't get it too hot? It has M1 with about 500 miles on it.

Thanks everyone for your help, the Firehawk is no longer for sale!
