Large animals in the middle of the hwy = catastrophe
Large animals in the middle of the hwy = catastrophe
So, I'm heading down hwy 6 a minute ago and the chevy truck in front of me throws something up in the air, something quite large. Before I have time to even think about what it might be, my front wheels are IN THE AIR from running it over. I look down, "check gauges" light is instantly on and oil pressure is zero. I make it to the shoulder, get out, and smoke is billowing everywhere. I look at the back of the car and it's COVERED in oil, completely covered. The car behind me stops to make sure everything's ok and his windshield is also covered in my oil. I look underneath the car and flesh is hanging from all over the place, dripping blood.
Needless to say I can't really see the total damage, but I'm pretty sure my oil pan was almost ripped off. It's still sitting on the side of the road. I'll try to keep you guys up to date tomorrow with the details sometime after I get it towed.
Looks like this broke college student might be in an ugly situation.
Later, Kyle

Umm... wtf was it?!?
What do you mean by they throw something up in the air? Did the drives throw it out or did they run over it and tossed it in the air?

So: A friend and I went back out to the hwy to look at it with some flashlights.
There's flesh, blood, and FUR completely covering the bottom of my car. The front air dam looks nasty, and the back sway bar took a lot of meat off the thing!
So we've come to the conclusion that it was probably a pig. And the oil came from the oil filter being almost ripped off. It's bent back at a pretty large angle. If I'm lucky the filter split in two and it'll be an easy fix. If I'm not lucky it stripped the threads for the filter and then the block's probably screwed. We'll see.

Re: Large animals in the middle of the hwy = catastrophe
Luckily chebbies use bolt on oil filter adapters, and they are aluminum. So if it broke anything I would assume it would be the adapter and not the steel block.
Worse case you'll have to scrounge another adapter and swap it and the filter out.
And make sure to clean all the blood and guts off the car before you start it up. Once it gets baked on the exhaust it will stink for a long time.
I would like to see the front of the truck if he hit it hard enough to toss it over the cab!!

That's really good information to know. I'm going to check it out tomorrow when we get it back to my house. Thanks a lot.
OH, and it didn't go OVER the truck in front of me, just came out from underneath it and bounced up.
One more question though: We're going to try to pull it behind my friend's explorer tomorrow, and we can only find one decent place to pull it from on my car. Under the hood, next to the hood latch? Is that pretty much the only place to do it on our cars?

Fixing to head out there and finish up. I found out that the oil filter had been the really only thing messed up by it. The oil pan wasn't even touched. In lieu of the situation, I'm a lucky guy. I took the filter off and replaced it, but still had a bad leak from the oil cooler adapter. Got that off and found out that the actual oil filter adapter (part that's bolted directly to the block) was cracked pretty bad from the filter being hit. SOOO.....I got lucky(again) and the dealership here in town had one on special order from 4 months ago, so he let me have it. Worked out alright.
The oil cooler I hear is a piece and not really worth it, so I'm getting rid of it. Just one other thing I'm doing at the same time.
I'll let you know how it turns out tonight. Here's some pics of the mess:
The adapter that cracked.
The oil all over the back of my car
Pieces of flesh hanging and oil all over the bottom of my car.

make sure and get off ALL the meat before it gets too nasty. i ran over a rather large dead dog on the highway last year, and didn't know i had pieces of it still under there until i started smelling it about a week later. had beef jerky all in the frame rails, control arms, nasty stuff. took a loooooog time to go away.
