I don't think of Houstons as a tourist town. But we do have all major sports including Socker, and Hockey. So you could go to a game. You can golf year round. It's a large town so there's plenty of ethnic food choices and entertainment, plays, opera, etc. The Aquarium Restaurant is very popular and there's a large number of TexMex restaurants.
And of course there is always NASA's Johnson Space Center. The only way to visit is to take a tour with "The Space Center", just out side the main gate.
Most of the touristy stuff is in Galveston, 30m south of Houston. There's the beach, The Strand(old part, lot's of shop), Flight Museum, Moody Gardens, etc, etc.
The Kemah Board Walk, south east side, is probably good for one night. Lots of restaurants and attraction.
Like most big cities don't hand around in the "nether regions" between the down town area and the burbs.

you could stop by the School of Automotive Machinists and see what kind of projects they are working on

There is always some street racing going on somewhere, but you have to know the right people to know where to go. Maybe your friend knows some of the right people?
