Sounds like some burned or ripped out wires maybe. But it is ignition realted. 36 = high res I believe and 42 is Ignition control module. Don't know if it helps any.

yesterday the car died on the high way and would not restart with the key so I stuck er in gear and poped the clutch started back up and ran fine for a while the check engine light came on. then the car started to die again taped the gas and came back to life. When I got home I ran the codes got 36,42 the car started hard but would start then would run fine for a short bit then start to die. this morning I could not get it to start at all. I put a diffrent computer in the car about a week and a half ago it had been sitting in my garage. it was suggested the maybe some of the prongs had gotten some moisture and coroaded anyone ever have this happen? I have two computers but had to put this one in beacuse the other one was killed durring a programming accident. I should be getting that computer fixed this week. should I hold off looking for any other problems untill i get the back or should I start checking other things?

How long is the short bit that it ran? You could check the opti harness. I have heard of people having problems with this before. Turned out to be an almost ripped out wire.

my car was bone stock when it did the code 42 thing. it would almost die but would barely stay running. id swap in a known good pcm from a friend or something. also, mine would run good for a little while too, sometimes longer than others, then the code 42 would come and performance went to crap and so did gas milage.
