Emissions testing

Well, maybe this isn't new news but I haven't seen a topic about it here. I heard on the news yesterday that Texas is going to starting doing emissions tests with the yearly vehicle inspection. This is the main reason I'm keeping my cats with my LT headers (if and when I get them - anybody wanna start a "help the Mann mod his car" fund ). Hopefully it won't get as **** as California. Correct me if I'm wrong but even moving the cats (i.e. LTs with cats in y pipe = moving cause its not exact stock location) will keep you from passing in Cali. That last parts is seems stupid. If you keep the cats and it passes the sniffer, why can't they be moved.

Hell, what if some incredible genius came up with a different way to clean the exhaust air without cats. would they say "nope, youre gonna have to have factory cats on that to pass. The intent is to pass the emmisions - not have the cats in a particular location. I know its a ridiculous "what if" but you get my point.

They may want to start but I talked to some people at an inspection place the other day and they said it was going to take 2 years minimum before they got all the parts in place. Each station will have to have a dyno in there to measure emissions testing which is going to cost a lot of $. I also heard that cars older than 5 years are going to have a lot of problems with the testing as well. Prepare to shell out some major bucks or get your sticker from Joe "I make my own stickers" Impersonator...

I always wondered about the dyno being such an expensive part of this test. It seems like the number shops offering inspections would be cut at least in half. I still wonder if they will be doing the "visual inspection" for location of cats? Doesn't really matter if its in two days or two years, or even ten years for that matter - I'm never selling my car. Well, maybe for the right price but that would be $$$$.

We've been going through dyno emissions testing here in Harris County for a couple of years now. There seems to be a sticker stop or something on every corner that can do emissions. Most of the techs dont know and wont research the correct cat location anyway, so basically if they are on the car and you pass the testing, they really dont care.

all 95' and older have to take the sniffer unless its a diesel. All OBDII get plugged into the computer and as long as you dont have an SES light on you will pass.

I talked to the guy who did my brother's truck and he told me my car might even pass the sniffer without a cat... He didn't seem to conserned about even looking for a cat. Only thing I noticed him checking was to see if my brother's truck had tail pipes(it's a 98). Also, my friend's dad owns a shop and he told me his 72 El Camino passed the test. Obviously they were just testing it out to see...

I'd just find a shop that isn't too ****. I think if you take it to one shop and it fails you have to keep taking it back to that shop until it passes, probably so you won't "cheat". Or you could find someone to sell you a sticker, I've been quoted $125, but I'm sure there are cheaper ones.

It's always good to make friends... Just find someone who will hook you up.

Good luck, I wouldn't loose any sleep worrying about it.

Oh, another thing. One of my friends came out here to Brazos county and got his done. I don't know for sure if they just don't do the "sniffer" test out here or if he just bought a sticker. But I think he used his brother's address to get it done; his brother lives out here. He told me the inspector said that after this year they are going to get more strict on letting people do what he did. He knows the inspector that's why he got to slide through.

My friend's Mustang has an off-road H-pipe, turn downs before the axle and he took off all the other emmissions equipment. But that probably doesn't matter since he was going to pass regardless...

Ahhh, MATT you moved again?!? I know of a place that doesn't look for those kinds of things, they just check the usual lights, horn, brakes, and sometimes take it for a test drive. Other than that it's not hard to get them without kitties.

Hmm...shoot me a PM of where I could go

I still have my car tagged in TX as well as my TX DL. I am trying to get back down to San Antonio. Right now, I'm in Las Vegas NV at Nellis AFB working on the F15/F16 Fighter Jets that have the Pratt&Whitney F100-220 engines in them. I just renew'd my registration and soon need an inspection. but its all good.

I'll be bringing the car out here after new years as long as the weather allows me to do so.

Hows your car running and how have you and the Fbody club been doing?
