Question DFW peeps: How much is the state inspection these days?

Mine is past due now. I've heard it being anywhere from $40 to $60. Exactly how much is it now?

I'm not sure, but my SES light is on. I heard that would make you fail. Anybody else hear that??

I was told the SES light for any of the last two cycles on the ECM will fail you? I don't have any idea what that means, but was told that if you drive the car around for a couple of days that would be enough time to clear the log. I too would appreciate some add'l info specifics...

I failed mine badly, but just paid the guy off and we were both happy. Good ol' Jiffy Lube!

I don't believe this is accurate. If your SES light is currently on you will not pass.

For '95 or older:
Your car has to pass the IM240 emissions standard. Which is similar to the old test except your car is on a dyno to simulate a load on the engine.

For '96 or newer:
What the computer looks for is that the MIL indicator indicates "0" (not illuminated) and that the OBDII diagnostic checks have been completed. I believe there are 7 checks that must be completed.

If you disconnect your PCM from its power supply, you must complete several OBDII driving cycles (http://www.obdii.com/drivecycle.html) to reset each of these diagnostic indicators.

At least this is how I understand it to work. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

And its $39.99 but Jiffy Lube is doing them for $34.99.

my car is catless, so there's no way in hell it would pass. i know a guy in fort worth who'll pass your car (assuming it doesnt pass) for $80. if it does pass, he charges $40.
hope that helps.

Catalytic converter failure
Faulty gas cap
Fuel metering out of spec
Incorrect ignition timing
Inoperative injection system and/or thermostatic air cleaner
Mis-routed vacuum lines
Faulty Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) System or Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System

the price is set by the state. i don't recall what it is, but you cannot pay more or less for this inspection.

OK, Suuuuure. If the shop is 'on the take' and allowing cars to pass inspection that otherwise wouldn't, wouldn't they be taking bribes?
