Why get a lid?

The next mod for my car will be intake, I've heard on this board that the main thing the lid does is replace the silencer that restricts flow. Well IMO the silencer is a completely separate piece than the air box, so why should i get the $130 kit from thunder racing where you're spending the bulk of that money on a new aitbox. I understand that it's a little better than the stock but if the majority of the gain is removing the silencer can't we just find something less retrictive to replace it, I'm thinking of getting a piece of pipe and heating it to shape it so the fit the baffles and then just getting some new clamps and ofcourse getting the powershot or accel high performance filter.

This is what's obvious to me, but the $130 kit is called a cold air inducton whisper lid. Does it actually do anything to cool the air or pressurize the air?, the description does not explain, it only says "this is the best mod you can get for your 3.8" and not much else

here's a link for your reference

I noticed it doesn't say cold air just whisper lid

but do you think i would be better off spending the $130 on the SLP cold air, and replacing the silencer myself?

I drew it in CAD, the first baffle elispe and the 2nd baffle circle and they're circumfernces match nicey, so if I get a 3.75 or 4.00" dia pipe and modify it, it should work well, and then get some non GM 4 inch clamps.

I might go ahead and do it tomight since i've got to work tommorrw anyway.

I always forget to consider hot tempretures under the hood, I've got to keep in mind that the temperatures can reach 250 degrees.

LOL! Sounds like you are having a conversation with yourself. Yes what are you saying you can make your own, but you do not have to do all that work. Just go to home depot, get a 3 in width and 4 inch long PCV pipe, 2 O-ring connectors and wallah. Instant whisper lid. Just have to a dremel to cut the baffles in the lid. Yes, ghetto, but paint it black and nobody will know. The PCV can take the heat. I drive 200 miles back and forth every week and it still has not warped anything.

If you get a lid, either buy from Thunder (GREAT COMPANY!) or from Texas Speed and Performance. They just designed a similar lid setup that is showing 5-7 more HP on the LS1 cars. Their site is www.Texas-Speed.com and they will surely take care of you!!!

to Thunder and TSP!

Well I got a 3.5 ID x 3.5" length black ABS pipe joint from lowes and stuck in the oven at 400 degrees, and bent it to match the baflles, it turned out great except for one thing, it's just a little to short, i got it on but i have to strecth the baffles, and all the damn auto stores close at 3 pm, and autozone has nothing but a bunch of rice boy toys so i could not get any 4" hose clamps, my dad had one in the garage but i had to use zip ties for the front, which will be temp until i can get some real clamps, I drove it, and i think it''s a little better, but it will take a week to really judge, when i note the mileage

I'll check ou that texas site

I haven't seen any place where you can get just a foot of pipe, you have to buy it ten foot, yeah it's cheap but i can't get it in my car.

What are these oring connectors you're talking about? What part of lowe's would they be? And what do you mean by dremmel cuttng the baffles?

look for a used lid, they typically go for $70-80 USD.

i took a dremel with a carbide tip & cut the baffles outta my lid, and got some piping & hose clamps to eliminate the air silencer. whatever pipe you get, remember it has to be able to withstand a negative pressure, (vacuum) along with high temps

i'll get a real lid eventually tho, this whole setup looks pretty ghetto

I still don't understand what you all mean when you say use a dremmel to cut the baffles out of the stock lid, what baffles?, the ones on the hoses?

remove your stock air lid from the vehicle. turn it upside down, so you're looking at the inside of the air lid. you'll see the baffles.

Yeah the baffles are the pieces of plastic sticking out of the lid. That helps slow down the air going in. Just grind them down. The o ring connectors are like pieces of metal shaped in an O that have a screw on top to tighten them to anything. This will help keep the pcv from slipping in and out. IT IS A PITA putting those things on. Especially the side going into the throttle body. It is easier if you have 2 people doing it.

i tried breaking mine off with some pliers, but they just didn't budge...ended up using a carbide dremal bit. i'd recommend the fasttoys ram air kit, found at:

www.fasttoys.net

a buddy of mine has it on his car. IMO, it gives a better cold ram air charge, than SLP's CAI.

everybody says that but SLP is a big company, who makes this fastoys unit? I imagine SLP would be hard to beat.
