V6 supercharger compatability
V6 supercharger compatability
Maybe some sort of a dumb question. I have just started looking into camaro's more seriously, I have always been a fan domestic cars and am considering purchasing one, particularly a 98-02 v6 (insurance will rape me on a v8, don't have the greatest record).
Anyways i was looking to get a little more performance out of the V6, probably in addition to exhaust, intake, header applications etc. I was wondering if this year camaro shares the same engine plant as the pontiac grand prix more specifically the supercharged GTP. I can't really afford to throw down a couple grand for a new s/c on top of the purchase price of the car and wanted to know if this can be bolted on or modified without too much work to be retro-fitted to the camaro engine. I'm sure with time i could find one from an auto wrecker for a decent price, and would like to know if this is a viable alternative.
thanks to you more knowlegeable guys around here for any input

Re: V6 supercharger compatability
Buy a V6 car with a blown motor for crazy cheap, Transplant an LS1, BAM instant Z28 with the V6 vin and low insurance! As for the supercharger, almost anything can be retro-fitted with enough time, patience and tools.
But I'm not sure if it would be somewhat hard or REALLY hard, or impossible.
All in all though, a 3.8 V6 can make some crazy power with a new cam and all the bolt ons! You'd still steam rice all day!

Re: V6 supercharger compatability
I was looking into an engine swap before and looking through the thread about it, it seems that you basically need to change everything. I just know it will be a lot of work trying to find a car i like, plus another donor car at with all the parts neccessary and in working order all in a price range i can afford, not to mention all the work that is gonna be needed to install it, there is now way i can do it myself.
I was looking for an easier way with less headaches i guess. If a pontiac GTP supercharger can bolt on with little (and i mean little modification) that would be ideal and cost effective.

Re: V6 supercharger compatability
The FWD 3.8L is NOT the same as the RWD version other than the "3.8L" designation, unless you consider one of them (the FWDer?) to be a 3800. Supposedly, I have heard there was a kit in the works for a supercharger for a RWD 3.8L....not my area of expertise, so don't hold me to that revelation.
Unlike the 3.4L/3400 v6s, you can't turn a FWD 3.8L intake around to make it fit in RWD applications. That's a bad way to start off...

Re: V6 supercharger compatability
thanks for the info and clearing up the point, I know they were both 3.8L's , but i wasn't sure if they were same engines with the same set up. Looks like it's back to the drawing board then
Re: V6 supercharger compatability
There are superchargers available for the 3.8 in the Camaro, however the roots-style blower that comes stock on a GTP will NOT fit without major modifications.
The FWD and RWD motors are actually very similar. There are a few things different, but the basic design is the same.

Hey don't fret! Port those heads, get an agressive cam, 100 shot NO2, and some good suspension mods and you'll be hitting mid-low 14's all day long, with some good 60 footers you'll be looking at 13's easy.

Re: V6 supercharger compatability
About how much should I expect to pay to have my heads ported? How much more power should I expect from those mods? I want to run with my brothers 01 gt mustang, but I can't afford a Z28. The only mods he has is CAI and straight pipes from the stock exhast manifold. I hate that damn mustang kicking my ***!!
Re: V6 supercharger compatability
Go here for 3800II heads: http://www.abbottracingheads.com/
IMO, they are the best you can get.
