I have 144,000 miles on my 99 Camero. At around 100,000 miles I noticed that sometimes when I let off the gas and get back on it, the RPM's go higher than normal. Usually at 70 I'm doing about 2000 RPMs. Sometimes that goes up to around 23-2400 for a little while, then it will drop back to 2000. I change the fluid and filter every 20,000 miles. Any ideas?
Yes I do drive a lot. It is an automatic. No it's not 3rd gear, because I want the tach and listen to the car and it's just kind of sluggish going back in. I haven't found any metal shving or anything on the Transmission pan magnet. The fluid always looks good, and there is no pattern to when it does this. I'n not sure what it is.
Sounds like the secondary shift active when higher rpms are happening,only when it disengages your feeling the lag when it(tranny) returns to normal.after being helped from engine tuning PCM
3rd&4th will split shift and raise the rpms temperarly. I would think this would happen more repeatedly with a motor thats losing power.

Sounds like a slipping transmission to me. I once had a Lumina that was doing that at around 165k. No metal or burnt fluid in the pan--but every now and then the rpm's would kick up when going into the next gear.
You have me curious-- a '99 with 144k...so far what have you had to do to keep your car running well? Any major probs, and at what mileage?

Thanks for the replies. I haven't had any problems other than replacing the Alternator at around 120,000. It has been a good car, and gets good gas mileage. I have noticed a small drop in engine power, at least it seems like it has dropped a little. I put on new plug wires and plugs, but I haven't had a chance to get a really good tune up.

That is some major mileage on such a relatively young car. At least she's been good to you!
Can't really help you on the RPM problem other than it sounds like some sort of slipping. My car did that when I had to replace the valve body but I had other problems in addition though.

Guys he didnt say it was happening going into gear(that would be slippage) Its no prob. Chuck,normal funtion. Our cars have what I said,a secondary shift to avoid downshifting to a certain extent.

Thanks for all the help ya'll. I do travel a lot, and I have really enjoyed my car. I hope to buy another work car soon, and start fixing up my Camaro, just to be a weekend car.
You can test my theory by doing this: When your driving down the road and the car is in overdrive, while keeping your foot on the gas tap the brake. The the RPM rises then drops suddenly, then you will know it's disengaging then reengaging torque converter lockup.
