Post Storing car for about a year!

Well, looks like I'm off to college and will not be using my car. It will be garaged for a year. My parents, however, will start it for me every week, but refuse to drive it. So, I'm wondering, if it is just left sitting there, but started and running every week, will it be okay? I've searched for posts about storing cars, but most are for only 6 months and that's usually for a winter period. I read something about letting the tires sit there and it'll ruin them. The tire thing I can do without, as I am looking forward to getting new rims and tires when I will use the car again anyways. Also, if gunk builds up in the engine, I can get it cleaned when I decide to use the car again right? Any suggestions? Thanks and please send all replies to heybog@yahoo.com if possible.

Hoiw are you storing it in a garage or out in the yard?

I would plead with them to drive it every now and then at least to the store, starting it and letting it run will help with keeping the seals form drying out too much.

letting them sti the tires will rot.

jsut curious where are you going t school?

Hey, what's up! Noticed you were in Orlando, FL I'll be going to UF in Gainesville. 'Bout an hour away huh? Well, the problem is that the insurance will be taken off the car. So, that means the plate will be gone too. My parents do not want to risk taking it out without insurance. I mean, if the tires rot, that's fine, I am willing to pay for new ones(besides.. I have the freakin' wheel covers right now... must get rims... rotting the tires is a darn good excuse!. As long as most of the internal components aren't rotted out. Also, it's a convertible, any suggestions that I wouldn't know about if there are special care concerns for a ragtop? Thanks guys!

I would also like to know...i'm heading up to UCONN on the 25th of August and I won't be driving my car untill next summer. I have a '97 Camaro Convertible. My brother will start the car like twice a month but mostly it will be sitting under a car cover. I heard that you can put blocks under the tires to help with the rotting is this true?

I would hope you could keep it in the garage if not, I would leave it outside with out a cover on it. I would fill up the gas tank and probibly put blocks, bricks or something elts under the tires, if you are keeping it in the garage I would leave the top UP so it doesent shrink or anything elts.
If I think of anything elts I will add later.

Sucks for you you have a track right next to you in gainesville also

rag top what color is it. I would check the appearance sections, but the guy my mom takes her convertable Sebring to puts this wonderful stuff on her top, looks like you would have jsut armour alled it but the shine lasts for weeks and protects pretty well,, you should try something like that with it. See if you cna get the parents to wash/wax the car at least once every 3 months if outside.

I'd suggest plugging the exhaust tips with something (when they're not running it of course) to keep any "critters" out. Also consider taking off the air lid and putting a rubber band and baggie or plastic grocery bag over the throttle body inlet. Keeps the bugs and stuff out of there too. Keep a couple bowls of baking soda on the floor too to try and absorb any smells that might accumulate inside.

You don't really need to start it every week. If you change the oil about a week before it goes into storage, and make sure the gas tank is full when it goes into storage, and disconnect the battery, and do the suggestions above, you should be fine just letting it sit for a year.

Sounds good guys! Thanks for your advice. I can rest easy now that I won't need my parents to start it. I just gave it an oil change about a week ago. I wish I oculd go to the track, but the closest I'll get to it is probably going to the Gator Nationals. Besides, it's a stock 3800 Convertible. Only thing I added so far was the Whisper Lid... it was all I could afford. Exhaust is defintely next when I'm not a poor college boy... which means a long time! BTW, the top is black and the car is white. I already put some scotchgard fabric protector on it; it beads water and keeps it nice and shiny.

Exclamation

Forgot to ask... will I need to put it up on blocks if I am letting it sit in the garage? Thanks.

It wouldn't hurt to keep the weight off the tires, but since you mentioned that you're getting new rims and tires anyway, then it doesn't really matter.
