Starter Removal????

hey i have a 95 z28 and i was able to remove the starter within 5 minutes just by unbolting it and disconnecting the wires...

on my gf's 94 3.4 ltr i can't get it out, its completely unbolted and all the wires are off, i even removed the metal shield around the solenoid. Do i have to removed part of the exhaust to fit it out of the bottom or is there something i am missing?

thanks
josh

Re: Starter Removal????

you have to remove the flywheel cover then you get the silinoid in between the exhaust and the trans cooler lines(if u have a trans cooler). Then u slide the starter out towards the trans. you have to get it just right then it just comes right out I just replaced my starter 2 months ago in my 93 3.4 and it took me 45 mins to figure out how to get it out the haynes manual is a POS.

P.S. dont over tighten the wires or u will break the plastic around the bolt and have to buy another silinoid.

if u want to take pics and send them to me at stonny9@bellsouth.net i will edit them with directions or i can try and take pics tomorrow when i get of work at 5

Re: Starter Removal????

well i actually ended up giving up and putting the starter back in...

i was going to do a rebuilding kit on it but when i opened that back of it up the brushes still looked good.... i checked the wires going to the starter, and the brushes. What else would cause it to refuse to start.

my gf will turn the key and all that happens is the lights dim, she sometimes has to try up to 6 times before it finally starts turning. I don't understand what is causing this. She doesn't have a job and i don't have the extra money to just go buy a starter.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated

thanks,
josh
