Shifting Problem

Every now and then, I grind the gears and it doesn't make me too happy. I would like a much smoother shift in between gears. Something without the synchronizer break in between each gear would be very nice.

The questions:
Would I need to get a whole new transmission?
Or just a new shifter?
If I just need a shifter, how hard is the install?
Should I take it somewhere?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Shifting Problem

it could be a few things... shifter makes it smoother and faster; does it do it when u are driving normally? or just at hard accel??

Re: Shifting Problem

3800II M5 owners know what I am talking about, it is just naturally rough, i just want smoother transitions between gears, thats all. It isn't a problem, I would just like a smoother shift, that is all. I dont know how to make it any simpler that that.

Re: Shifting Problem

buy an auto .. . j/k well i know plenty of M5, M6 owners taht have smooth shifts, you just have to get into the groove and shift the way u likem try different foot controls and different revs. i know if u shift at higher revs its a jumpier shift if you shift at lower revs it smooths out.

Re: Shifting Problem

Well My m5 shifted alright for stock but I put a B&M ripper on with a B&M **** it works great. You dont need to be a mechanic to install a shifter, not at all just follow the instructions and you will be fine.
If your looking for a aftermarket shifter I recommend the ripper.

Re: Shifting Problem

Let me give a little more info.

The clutch is all the way in. I move the stick from first to second and back again several times, and there is a bump in between gears. I am sitting completely still, hell, the car doesn't even have to be on. There is a bump when I go from first to second and so on. This has nothing to do with the way I am driving, I assure you.

Clutch to the floor
Move the stick from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, etc.
Clutch remains on the floor
There is a break between gears.

Say for instance: I am sitting still, the car is off, and the clutch is pressed to the floor. I am in 3rd gear (with the clutch to the floor) and I move to 4th gear. As I go through neutral, there is a break, like something wants me to pause in the neutral position between gears.

I really hope this makes it easier.

Re: Shifting Problem

well... look inside of a tranny and you might see why... There are alot of teeth to fit together and if your not perfect then its not going to just slide in. All tranny will not just let you go freely through the gears 100% of the time.. even less with more miles and wear. Does that make sence. Its normal, there isnt anything u should worry about.

Re: Shifting Problem

I appreciate you people trying to help, I might just be phrasing/wording my concerns inadequetaly. I might have better luck showing someone what I am talking about.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Shifting Problem

I am almost sure this is what he is saying:
He doesnt want that feeling of resistance as he shifts through the gears. You all know what it is, but like myself probably dont pay any attention to it. You know how the shifter feels when it is in neutral and you can wiggle it around freely without any resistance to it moving back and fourth? I think what he is saying is he wants his shifts to be like that in between shifting gears, with little or no resistance to the shifter going into gear.

Now I have only driven a stick twice, and it was an 04 GTO, and I noticed the resistance as you shifted gears, there is that little stop there as you go from 1st-neutral-2nd. I managed to make it smoother by just slamming it from 1st to 2nd and not granny shifting it. Its a manual, just get used to it I guess.....
