1994 Firebird 3.4, Some Questions

Ok So My Friend Bought A 1994 Fireberd With The 3.4 Litre And It Was Sold To Her Under The Impression That It Needs Headgaskets.

Now I`ve Worked On Cars My Whole Life And Seen Lots Of Headgaskets That Were Bad, But This Problem Doesn`t Seem Like Headgaskets To Me. Are These Motors Prone To Headgaskets?
Or Blocks Cracking? How About Piston Meltdown?

The Car Smokes White ( Coolant ) Out Of The Exhaust And Also Missfires Badly. If I Hold The Rpm`s At Like 2500 The Engine Will Smooth Out And Stop Missing And Runs Fine For A Bit Then Starts Missing Again, But The Whole Time It`s Smoking Out The Back.

I Pulled The Plugs And None Have Any Coolant Deposits On Them.
Im Stumped, I Would Think That The Plugs Would Show Signs Of Moisture Present On Them.

A Friend Of Mine Said That The 3.4 Is Notorious For The Intake Gaskets Leaking Into The Egr Tubes And Smoking Like A Headgasket But I`ve Never Heard Of Such A Thing And Thats Why Im Here.

Is There Any Known Problem That The 3.4 Is Known For That Causes The Smoke?
Such As Headgaskets,block,pistons,intakegaskets.

What Are The Chances Of Just Throughing Some Gaskets On This Thing And It Working Out For Me?

Any Help Here Would Be Great, Im Really Stumped On This One.

3.4 are netorus for head gaskets going out at around 100K or so. Depending on the milage of the car and wether or not the head gaskets have been replaced or not will determin that. And from what you are discribing is sounds to me like an intake manifold gasket going bad. Do a compression test and block test to see if the head gasket is gone. But from what you are discribing I blieve it to be an intake manifold. Shoudln't take you too long to do in the drive way. Probably good 4 hours of hard solid work.

ive never heard such things (yes i have a lot of experience with this motor)

as for the intake manifold leak, that problem is more often a problem for the 3400 motors found in front wheel drive cars, its not a common problem for F-cars though

ive never heard of a block failing, the pistons are rather fraigle if crack has been used

my personal experinces say that just replacing the head gaskets even if you arent sure is a bad call (ive seen too many people throw new parts on a car when they werent necessary)

as for what the problem is... im not a mechanic, good luck , what do all the plugs look like? is any cylinders running rich?

Re: 1994 Firebird 3.4, Some Questions

from what I'v heard the head gaskets tend to go out at around 100K. Never happened to my car personaly but then again I bought mine use at 120K and I have no idea as to how the car was treated before I owned it. I'm just speaking from what I head about other peoples cars. I know it happened to a friend of mine right at 105K.
