this is related to the security system in the car, the key is wearing out. The small chip in teh key is failing. Get a new key or use your spare , should work. If not, then something inside teh mechanism is ****ed.

Would you have to take it to a dealer to check that out, or could an auto electric shop be able to do that? Has only done this since replacing new alternator and battery, right Chris?

i get this problem with my '94 too, but its not 15 min. its only about five. i have a viper security system with remote start, and there is a device that bypasses the security so u dont need the key in ignition for remote start. occasionally the security light comes on even when i use the key, and it is a pain in the ***, but it rarely happens.

do you have an aftermarket alarm system?

oh yeah, and electric diagnostics aren't cheap at most places (one shop here is like $80/hour), so if you do decide to take it to a shop, look around for the best price.

Well it is a co-worker's car, and I think he said he had a Viper alarm on it also.

I had the same problem with my 94Z. I installed a turbo timer, so I needed the car to be able to run without the key in it. At first I tricked the VATS by taking a multi meter and checking the resistance of my key chip, then spliced in the proper resistors to match the same resistance to my key into the small wires that came form my key cylinder. That worked for a while but eventually my VATS fried. So I turned the VATS off with tuner cat and took the relay off which is located on the passengers side on the ouside of the glove box. It has four wires, purple, yellow, brown and a black and yellow. I cut the purple and brown wire and spliced them together, not the yellow and brown because then the car can start in drive or any other gear, and tada, no more problems with security lights, or starting the car. remember this will not fix the problem, but will disable it completely. Hope this helps.
