By "rocking bad", do you mean the idle is rough?

no, idle is fine, its when u are moving, in gears 1-3 at a constant speed. or when u are driving down the highweay and let it coast and press back on the gas, it has a free spot...(like the the driveshaft has play, it makes a bad rock or thump noice and goes again)...make since?

jack the rear end of the car up so that the rear wheels are free. Make sure the e-break is off and that the tranny is out of gear. Crawl under the car and grab the drive shaft and see if there is any play in the u-joints or some where else. I gat the same problem you are discribing and I think mine is in the rear end. Haven't fully diagnosed it but I can hear the thud comming form the rear of the car. It might also be the gears in the tranny start to ware out and not making full contant with each other like they are supose to, and since you are saying it only really happens in the first 3 gears I'm leaning towards the possibility of the tranny gears getting ate up somehow. How often do you get your tranny fluid changed? If its been a while I would lean towards your tranny before anything else.

its a 5 speed, not auto, so i have never changed it. never low. i thought it might be in the rear end, but it doesnt do it 100%of the time, sometimes its really bad, others its not. but i will try to check that agian this weekend.

I think its circumstantial. A few certant things have to be present for it to happen. It doesn't happen to mine all the time just every now and again. And about the fluid plz don't tell me your driving your tranny with 10 year old fluid. Plz change it for your tranny's sake. Its something that should be done regularly just like your rear end fluid.
