rear main seal
rear main seal
does anyone know where i can find a guide on how to replace the rear main seal on the engine. i've got an oil leak that i'm almost certain is the rear main seal, and being an expensive fix, i'm trying to decide if it's worth trying to fix it myself. thanks for any help. btw, it's a 3.8L if it matters.
rear main
Haynes has a pretty good description on replacing the rear main seal. The part itself will cost you around $2-5 and as for replacing it, if you have a general knowledge in mechanics you can do it in your driveway. I replaced mine when I did my clutch. The toughest part was removing the old seal. The trick is to use a sheet metal screw and screw it into the old seal being careful not to gouge the metal surrounding the seal in which it sets in. Put two screws in the seal at the 12 o' clock and 9 o'clock position and use a screwdriver to pry it out. Are you absolutely sure it's your rear main leaking in the first place? Seems like a lot of work if you're not sure. I had a similar leak that came down the back of the pan and dripped on the cross pipe of the exhaust. It would burn off before it hit the ground, but I later found out (after thinking it was the rear main) that it was the valve cover gasket. Well, anyway...good luck to you and most of all HAVE FUN!!! Be sure to get a few cases before you start, and get a few friends to help with the tranny removal and install. It's a real pain getting out and back in.
