Question Rear-end lubrication level question.

I decided since the Camaro has had the same fluids in it since it rolled off the line 9 years and 128,000 miles ago and the gasket is leaking a bit that its time to change it out. I don’t want to spend a ton of cash. I know the gasket is about $7 but I have no clue what kind of oil/fluid to buy or how much. Help please!

I believe it's 85W90 gear oil that you're supposed to use, along with some GM limited slip additive. Or if you use synthetic gear oil you don't need the limited slip additive. The gear oil comes in a squeeze bottle thing, and after draining the fluid and putting the new gasket and cover on, you just open the plug on the side and squeeze it in til it starts coming out. Then plug it back up and you're good to go

Yes, don't forget the posi additive, you can get it from gm or autozone.

Failure to put the additive will cause the rear end to make noise and cause you problems.

I think you will need 2 quarts to fill the rear end. Just keep adding fluid until it starts to run out the fill hole. Just like when you tighten the bolts on an automatic transmission, don't over tighten the rear end bolts or your gasket WILL leak. Putting a little RTV on both sides of the gasket will help it seal better also.

My cousins nephew got back from active duty in Korea and says that the hookers over there prefer Vaseline over KY.

Only if you use dyno oil. I used Amsoil in my rear-end and drove it for 3 years without a peep or a problem. You can still use it if you want, but it won't hurt if you don't as long as you go synthetic.
