GU2 : AXLE REAR, 2.73 RATIO
GU4 : AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO (V6)
GU5 : AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
GU6 : AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO

Check your RPO codes in the door jamb or glove box.

GU5 for sure? Is it an A4? See if you have RPO G80.

If the car is an RS(sport appearance package in later years) it got the upgraded 3.23 gears. My 00 V6 just has the 3.08's with an open diff. If I run across a 3.42 from a M6 for a good price I want to swap that in.

3.73's are kinda big compared to the stock 3.08's. Ill bet your mileage and cruising rpm's will go into the toilet, but you'll feel a big difference.

I thought about changing the ratio on my car when I blew the rear end, but I liked my 30mpg and 1900rpm at 70mph.

yes, this is one of the most common gears in our v6's

You can install 3.42's from a factory F body and just do a whole rear end swap or you can install 3.73's. I would reccommend havingh someone install those for you as they have to be set with in a couple thousands of an inch. Your lucky because you have a 97 and the gears will be tunable in your computer.
